CHICAGO (CBS) ? The city?s restaurant community is gearing up for the NATO and G8 summits planned for Chicago in May, and officials insisted Monday they are not worried about security measures restricting access to their businesses.
As WBBM Newsradio Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports, Illinois Restaurant Association president Sheila O?Grady encouraged her Chicago members to join Chicago Culinary Crossroads, a so-called ?dine around? program featuring cuisine from the eight nations comprising the G8.
Frequent diners at participating restaurants can also enter a contest for various prize packages.

The restaurant promotion will run for most of May, although delegates attending the summit will only be in Chicago for part of the weekend of May 19-21.
?We?re talking 48 hours, largely over a weekend in Chicago,? Healey said.
Meantime, as CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine reports, some security training for the summits was underway Monday, although most security plans were still being kept secret, less than three months before the summits start.
Either summit organizers don?t know yet what those security plans will be, or they don?t want to tip off protesters planning to disrupt the summits.
The only type of training the media has had access to so far have been demonstrations by a private security firm assisting with security for the summits.
Katalin Ogren demonstrated the Israeli fighting technique called Krav Maga, which Beacon Operation Security Services is teaching to those who will escort and provide security for members of international delegations attending the summits.
Kim Castro, lead operations director for BOSS, said they have trained about 100 people so far for the security details.
BOSS has been hired by local hotels and businesses to train their own security officers for the personal protection of key summit delegation members and their families.
?It will be either the delegates? families, or some other people who are non-delegates, that are coming for the events,? Castro said.
While Chicago police said they?re currently training officers to use batons and shields, they won?t provide details of summit security training or let the media see the training they?re providing.
?I think what we?re trying to is deal with misinformation,? Healey said. ?It?s a very short window of time when dignitaries are in town; and we do this all the time. We do Lollapalooza downtown, we do the Air and Water Show downtown, we?re very experienced in dealing with crowds downtown.?
But Healey wasn?t able to reveal details about how security arrangements might affect traffic on Lake Shore Drive and the Stevenson Expressway, which run past McCormick Place; or the trains which run beneath the convention center; or about closings which might affects businesses or residents during the summits.
?It?s still three months out. It?s very early in the planning process. As we said before, we don?t exactly even know the exact number of countries that are coming,? Healey said. ?But we?re working very closely with our partners at the federal government, our partners in law enforcement here to ensure that, over this very brief weekend, that it?s a great event for Chicago and that things will run smoothly.?

World News - Pakistan finishes demolishing bin Laden house
Pakistani authorities in Abbottabad are doing their best to keep unwanted visitors away from the demolition of Osama bin Laden's former home. NBC's Annabel Roberts reports.

Pakistani security personnel on Sunday completed the demolition of the?compound where?al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces?last May.
"The process launched for demolishing the compound on Saturday evening has been completed on Sunday night. The whole structure of the building has been razed to the ground. It actually took some time as the process of removing demolition and removing the wreckage was going on same to same," a senior security official said in Abbottabad.
The official, who requested anonymity,?said?precautionary measures, including a curfew and heavy security around the compound,?were taken to avoid any problems during the?demolition. When asked why the demolition took place now, the official told NBC News that the razing of the structure?had been planned soon after bin Laden's death.
"A number of meetings had taken place since the May 2 operation for demolishing the building, but the compound could not be demolished earlier due to difference in opinions among the officials concerned. It was finally decided to demolish the building and the timing for the process was chosen Saturday night," the official said.

A senior police officer said that an unannounced curfew in the town remained in place until late Sunday night.
To secure the area,?Pakistan army soldiers and police personnel were deployed in?large numbers to the?area.
"The recent rockets' attack by unknown people on military installations in Abbottabad city had created serious concerns among the military authorities and local administration there," the police officer said.
The police officer, who requested anonymity,?said the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Barrister Masood Kausar was scheduled to visit Abbottabad during the day?to see the demolition, but?later canceled his trip?for unknown reasons.
Local residents in Bilal Town said security measures were later relaxed when the last portion of the compound was razed to the ground using heavy machinery.
Future plans for the lot?include the construction of "a nice park" --?with green areas and benches -- that will be built "within a month,"?a senior government official told NBC News.

QUITO, ECUADOR?Long before the Spanish conquered the Incas in 1533, and centuries before the Incas inhabited this area, the present-day site of Quito International Airport was a marshy lake surrounded by Indian settlements?the Quitus on one shore and the Ipias on the other. Between A.D. 200 and 800 these cultures prospered here, fishing the lake, growing corn, beans and potatoes in the fertile soil, and fermenting an alcoholic drink?chicha?made of a watery corn broth.
In 1980, while clearing land for new construction in a warren of graffiti-covered cinderblock shanties bristling with barbwire and defended by concrete walls tipped with broken glass, workers scraped open a tomb that had been hidden for over a millennium beneath the ramshackle neighborhood. Then, nine more deep-welled tombs were uncovered in the volcanic rock, each containing about 20 bodies. The walls of the shafts were lined with Quitus remains, each one crouched in the fetal position, clothed in the finest textile, adorned with gold jewelry, and surrounded by pottery containing offerings of food and chicha for the afterlife.
Yeast biologist Javier Carvajal Barriga, of the Pontificia Universidad Cat?lica del Ecuador in Quito, collected scrapings from inside large, torpedo-shaped clay fermentation vessels taken from one of the tombs in an attempt to recover microbes that had fermented the ancient chicha and, if possible, revive them.

Under the sterile conditions of his laboratory, he scratched away the surface layers from inside the fermentation vessels hoping to collect yeast trapped deep in the pottery's pores. Using a special method that he devised to humidify the desiccated cells, repair their damaged membranes, and jump-start their arrested metabolisms, he coaxed a community of yeasts, which had lain dormant in the entombed vessels since A.D. 680, back to life. Carvajal says he resurrected "a consortium of yeasts" from the containers, but none of the yeasts were? Saccharomyces cerevisiae?the type used in modern fermentation. They were primarily strains of the genus Candida, closely related to the well-known yeast that causes skin and vaginal infections. But careful genetic analysis showed that two strains of yeast were a new species of Candida, which he named C. theae, meaning "tea."
These findings confirm 16th-century reports of how indigenous people in the Ecuadorian Andes fermented their chicha. According to Spanish chroniclers, Inca Indians initiated fermentation using animal bones, human saliva and even human feces.
"The most closely related species to C. theae are C. orthopsilosis, C. metapsilosis and C. parapsilosis, all of which are found in human saliva and feces," Carvajal says.? Indeed he found human-associated C. parapsilosis, along with C. tropicalis, among the community of yeast in the ancient fermentation vessels. C. parapsilosis is the second-most commonly isolated pathogenic species of Candida infecting people. "Also [there are] the Crytococcus saitoi and C. laurentii that are related to respiratory diseases. They [the Quitus] were chewing and spitting the corn [into the fermentation vessels], so we can assume this population probably had some respiratory problems caused by pathogenic yeasts."

Friday, February 17, 2012Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University have discovered that brain cells commonly thought to play a supporting role actually are critically important for the growth of brainstem neurons responsible for cardiorespiratory control. The discovery has profound implications for the prevention and treatment of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), the leading cause of death in children aged one month to one year.
The new discovery is published online in Neuroscience.
In their study, the OHSU team looked at glial cells, non-neuronal cells of the brain, and found that they very potently regulate growth of nerve cells in the brainstem. In fact, the glial cells actually inhibit the growth of brainstem neurons and may be as important for establishing neuronal networks as neurotrophic factors, a family of proteins essential for brain growth and survival. The OHSU study is the first to find that glial cells inhibit nerve cell growth.
"Previous research has shown that a common feature of the brains of SIDS babies is a dramatically increased number of glial cells," said Agnieszka Balkowiec, M.D., Ph.D., principal investigator and associate professor of integrative biosciences in the OHSU School of Dentistry. "Based on the results of our new study, the increase in glial cells in SIDS babies could be the cause of a compromised growth of brainstem neurons that control the cardiorespiratory function and, ultimately, cause death."
The new study also shows that glial cells direct the growth of brainstem neurons caused by BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor), another molecule found by the Balkowiec lab to play an important role in cardiorespiratory control.
"Our study shows that the picture is more complex than we had previously thought," said Balkowiec. "A better understanding of interactions between BDNF and glial cells could play a significant role in the development of treatment for SIDS, high blood pressure, and other disorders with a deficient cardiorespiratory control."

The network said on Thursday that "after 10 years, we have decided to part ways with Pat Buchanan. We wish him well."

Buchanan wrote that advocacy groups like Color of Change and the Anti-Defamation League brand people as racists or anti-Semites if they dare "to venture outside the narrow corral in which they seek to confine debate." They seek to silence and censor dissent while proclaiming devotion to the First Amendment, he said.
"I know these blacklisters," he wrote. "They operate behind closed doors, with phone calls, mailed threats and off-the-record meetings. They work in the dark because, as Al Smith said, nothing un-American can live in the sunlight."
The liberal media watchdog Media Matters for America said that MSNBC made the right decision in letting Buchanan go.
The book "was not his first, nor his worst offense," said Ari Rabin-Havt, executive vice president of Media Matters. "He's been making the same racially insensitive, anti-Semitic and homophobic statements for the past 50 years."

In a study of the molecular underpinnings of plants' pest resistance, Rice University biologists have shown that plants both anticipate daytime raids by hungry insects and make sophisticated preparations to fend them off.
"When you walk past plants, they don't look like they're doing anything," said Janet Braam, an investigator on the new study, which appears this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. "It's intriguing to see all of this activity down at the genetic level. It's like watching a besieged fortress go on full alert."
Braam, professor and chair of Rice's Department of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, said scientists have long known that plants have an internal clock that allows them to measure time regardless of light conditions. For example, some plants that track the sun with their leaves during the day are known to "reset" their leaves at night and move them back toward the east in anticipation of sunrise.
In recent years, scientists have begun to apply powerful genetic tools to the study of plant circadian rhythms. Researchers have found that as many as one-third of the genes in Arabidopsis thaliana -- a widely studied species in plant biology -- are activated by the circadian cycle. Rice biochemist Michael Covington found that some of these circadian-regulated genes were also connected to wounding responses.
"We wondered whether some of these circadian-regulated genes might allow plants to anticipate attacks from insects, in much the same way that they anticipate the sunrise," said Covington, now at the University of California, Davis.
Danielle Goodspeed, a graduate student in biochemistry and cell biology, designed a clever experiment to answer the question. She used 12-hour light cycles to entrain the circadian clocks of both Arabidopsis plants and cabbage loopers, a type of caterpillar that eats Arabidopsis. Half of the plants were placed with caterpillars on a regular day-night cycle, and the other half were placed with "out-of-phase" caterpillars whose internal clocks were set to daytime mode during the hours that the plants were in nighttime mode.
"We found that the plants whose clocks were in phase with the insects were relatively resistant, whereas the plants whose clocks were out of phase were decimated by the insects feeding on them," Goodspeed said.Wassim Chehab, a Rice faculty fellow in biochemistry and cell biology, helped Goodspeed design a follow-up experiment to understand how plants used their internal clocks to resist insect attacks. Chehab and Goodspeed examined the accumulation of the hormone jasmonate, which plants use to regulate the production of metabolites that interfere with insect digestion.
They found that Arabidopsis uses its circadian clock to increase jasmonate production during the day, when insects like cabbage loopers feed the most. They also found that the plants used their internal clocks to regulate the production of other chemical defenses, including those that protect against bacterial infections.
"Jasmonate defenses are employed by virtually all plants, including tomatoes, rice and corn," Chehab said. "Understanding how plants regulate these hormones could be important for understanding why some pests are more damaging than others, and it could help suggest new strategies for insect resistance."
