All heart | luke, gracie, adam - News - The Orange County Register

NORTH TUSTIN ? The twins took their first helicopter ride when they were young ? 1 day old.

Grace and Luke Chez, lying side-by-side in incubators, were whisked from the Orange County hospital where they were born to Children's Hospital Los Angeles for life-saving treatment.

Terra and Adam Chez are shown with their children Abbey, 2, and Luke, 7. Their children were born with a congenital heart defect (CHD) ? a third child Grace, Luke's twin, died of the condition at age three on January 9, 2008. Terra and Chez have founded a non-profit, Hopeful Hearts, to raise awareness about CHD.

And so began a journey of fear, tragedy and, ultimately, hope.

Grace and Luke's parents, Terra and Adam Chez, would use another word to describe their seven-year saga:

Miraculous.

???

"Hey, princess!"

Abigail Chez, 2?, has just woken from a nap. Her dad greets her as she walks into the kitchen of the Chez home in North Tustin.

With blond hair, pale skin and blue eyes, Abbey bears a striking resemblance to her sister, "Gracie."

Abbey has something else in common with Gracie. Both children were born with congenital heart disease. So was Luke.

Three kids, all born with the No. 1 cause of infant death in the U.S. The odds of this happening are staggering.

So, too, are the challenges weathered by their parents.

Inspired to reach out to other parents of children with congenital heart disease (known often as CHD), Terra and Adam Chez started a nonprofit, Hopeful Hearts, to raise money and awareness for a condition that gets little public attention even though it affects 1 in 100 babies.

"We want to do something to make a difference for other families going through what we've been through," Adam Chez says.

Adam and Terra?? friends since age 10, married for 12 years?? want more people to know about CHD.

They also want people to know about Gracie.

???

Because she was carrying twins, a potentially high-risk pregnancy, Terra, now 39, was subjected to particularly rigorous prenatal testing.

So the couple ? both healthy, with no history of congenital heart disease in their families?? got the diagnosis early, just 20 weeks into the pregnancy: Gracie and Luke had CHD.

The babies arrived on Feb. 9, 2005. Gracie was born with truncus arteriosus, a critical form of CHD. Luke was diagnosed with tetralogy of Fallot with pulmonary atresia?? the same as Abbey would be four years later. This, too, is a critical form of CHD.

Gracie had open-heart surgery when she was four days old. She almost died. Luke had his first surgery at five months.

Luke, now 7, later had a second open-heart surgery, and a third ? to replace a valve ? is coming soon. Abbey has had two surgeries.

Gracie eventually had four. She was the chatty, feisty twin to the quieter Luke. She loved to be around people rather than play with toys.

"She had a wisdom about her," says Adam, 36.

The end came suddenly, and unexpectedly.

On the evening of Jan. 8, 2008, Gracie was taken to the hospital with flu-like symptoms?? just two days before a scheduled catheterization. One minute she was being treated for dehydration, and the next she coded and was fighting for her life.

The following morning Gracie died from complications of CHD. She'd been in the hospital about eight hours.

She passed away in her father's arms.

???

Luke hops on a lounge chair next to his mother after bouncing on a trampoline in his backyard with his little sister.

Luke, a first-grader, loves baseball and other sports.

Looking at Luke, you see no hint of his medical challenges, though Luke helps clarify things by pulling up his shirt and showing off a thin, pale scar running down the center of his chest.

Luke does this as his parents are describing Hopeful Hearts. It's a foundation he knows something about.

"It's to help children who have special hearts," Luke says. "Like me."

Terra and Adam Chez launched Hopeful Hearts in April 2008.

They did so because they felt there weren't enough resources for parents and families going through the trauma of raising a baby with CHD. It's an ordeal that includes long days and nights in critical-care units. It's a life of anxiety, worry and deep lows; for many, it can be a life of pain.

For now, in-the-womb testing for CHD isn't routine. The non-profit's mission is to promote early detection. The organization also promotes valve research, and provides financial support to children and families living with the condition.

Congenital heart disease receives 1 cent of every dollar raised by the American Heart Association. And unlike many other common, life-threatening diseases, there is no dedicated, national organization aimed at fighting CHD.

In its first year, Adam says, Hopeful Hearts provided financial support to 30 families.

???

After they lost Gracie, Terra and Adam were surprised to find that Terra was pregnant again, this time with Abbey.

"I didn't think I could do another girl," Terra says.

She and Adam also didn't think they could cope with another child with CHD.

But they did, and they are.

And their push to help others has grown. Over the last few years, Hopeful Hearts has expanded to provide financial support for around 75 families a year, says Adam, who owns care facilities for the developmentally disabled.

Through their nonprofit, the couple has donated $150,000 to outfit a critical care unit at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. They're also planning a gala, June 9, to raise more money for the cause. Their new goal: $200,000.

???

Terra and Adam say their Christian faith has played a big role in getting them through the trauma of losing Gracie, and in coping with the medical issues their surviving children face.

They also say helping other families dealing with CHD is therapeutic.

"Time spent with the foundation is time spent with Gracie, and time spent in honor of Luke and Abbey,"?Terra says.

Terra watches Abbey run up to her.

In Abbey's face, and in her gleeful screams, Terra sees her departed child?? a girl they now call Angel Gracie.

"Honestly," she says, "giving back is healing for me."

Says Adam: "For me, the foundation keeps Gracie alive. She's still doing great things."

Sudan and South Sudan to resume negotiations

After weeks of fighting, in which South Sudan took out one of Sudan's last remaining oil fields, the two countries are returning to the negotiation table, under African Union mediation.?

Sudan and South Sudan will return to the negotiation table on May 29, the first sign of hope in their troubled relations after a month of fighting.

After a series of aerial bombing raids on South Sudan from their northern neighbor, South Sudan?s Army moved across the border into the Sudan oil town of Heglig in April, shutting down oil production before withdrawing.

South Sudan separated from Sudan in July 2011 after a referendum. Since then, clashes between the two have become a regular occurrence, partly because a proper demarcation of borders or an agreed plan for sharing oil revenues was never officially decided.

The United Nations has demanded that Sudan and South Sudan put an end to fighting, and Sudan?s chief spokesman Al-Obeid Meruh, confirmed that Sudan and South Sudan have agreed to an immediate cease-fire.?The resumption of talks next week in Addis Ababa, announced by the African Union?s designated mediator, former South African President Thabo Mbeki, offers the first chance to start the process of resolving those unaddressed issues.

"The two parties already started to implement the resolution and the roadmap. The meeting will discuss the progress of implementation," Mr. Meruh told Agence France Presse news agency.

The office of South Sudan?s chief negotiator, Pagan Amum, told Reuters that the South would join talks as well. "The government of South Sudan requested for a meeting to convene as soon as possible... We agreed to recommence negotiations on May 29,? Mr. Amum?s office said in a statement.

Given the amount of diplomatic capital spent on bringing peace between Sudan and South Sudan ? their brutal 20-year civil war ended with a 2005 peace deal; and given the economic need to get South Sudan?s oilfields pumping again ? South Sudan shut all production after disputes with Sudan about Sudan?s oil pipeline fees to its Port Said ? resumption of peace talks will be welcome.

University of Maryland, Baltimore to revamp teaching on pain

As part of a federal project aimed at better treating pain, the University of Maryland, Baltimore will begin revamping the way it teaches future doctors, dentists, nurses and pharmacists.

Pain affects approximately 100 million Americans and their treatment and lost productivity are estimated to cost up to $635 billion, according to the National Institutes of Health, which recruited academic centers to help with the problem.

A pain consortium of two dozen NIH agencies received 56 proposals and picked 11 universities to be Centers of Excellence in Pain Education. Over the next three years, they are expected to develop courses in assessing, diagnosing and treating pain, and avoiding abuse of prescription painkillers.

The curriculum developed by each will be posted on a public website that other universities can use to shape their own programs, said Dr. David Thomas, a health scientist administrator in the National Institute on Drug Abuse and a consortium member.

"Pain is not taught to a great degree in medical, nursing, pharmacy and dental schools, or to a degree we consider enough, given the number of people it affects," he said. "We wanted more pain education for providers. So we took the approach of trying to find pain champions in these schools who wanted to get more pain education into their curriculum."

Thomas said the universities were chosen for providing the "biggest impact."

Each school will receive about $275,000 to develop a new curriculum, which in many cases will cross professional school lines.

That's the case at Maryland, where students from each school will sit in class together and "pore over the same cases," said Mary Lynn McPherson, a professor and vice chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science, who led Maryland's successful proposal along with Sharon Gordon, director of graduate research education in the School of Dentistry.

Dr. Jay Perman, Baltimore campus president, has been emphasizing inter-professional learning and thought it would work well here because everyone has the same goal of treating pain, McPherson said.

McPherson expects that within a year students will begin using the revamped curriculum, which will be continually retooled to add cases and new methods of teaching. She believes Maryland had already been teaching pain at a level above other universities, but students from different programs were not learning other professionals' perspectives.

"Pain is such a difficult problem," she said. "It's physical and psychological and there is a lot of fear involved. It takes a village to treat a pain patient."

In addition to the University of Maryland, Baltimore, other schools chosen for the new task include the University of Washington, Seattle; the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, Philadelphia; Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville; the University of Rochester, N.Y.; the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque; the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Boston; the University of Alabama at Birmingham; the Thomas Jefferson University School of Medicine, Philadelphia; the University of California, San Francisco; and the University of Pittsburgh.

The NIH consortium specifically wanted the universities to focus on rehabilitation, arthritis, musculoskeletal, neuropathic and headache pain. They are expected to use the latest research on integrative pain management, the over- and under-prescribing of pain medications, gender's influence on pain and pain in the very young and old.

Responsible Pet Ownership Blog: How to Help Your Dog or Cat ...

    By Linda Cole

An overweight dog or cat can struggle with many of the same health concerns overweight people have to deal with. There's nothing wrong with giving your pet a few TidNips treats now and then, especially when training, but we need to understand the importance of exercise and maintaining a proper and healthy weight for our pets just as much as we do with our own weight. An obese pet is no laughing matter.

It's not as easy as you might think to help your dog or cat lose weight. Let's face it, cats spend a good deal of their time sleeping, which is normal for them. Trying to get a cat motivated to exercise will mean you need to play with her. You have to be careful, however, and not allow her to lose weight too quickly because cats can easily develop a very serious disease called Fatty Liver Disease that's hard to treat and can be life threatening. The cause is unknown, but obesity is suspected to play a role.

One out of every four dogs and cats are overweight. Here's a simple way to help you determine if your pet is too heavy. Rub your hand down along your pet's side, under the hair. If you can feel their ribs, they aren't overweight. However, if you can't feel their ribs it's time to consider a weight loss program, but only after your vet has had a chance to give them a checkup. Weight issues in dogs can be associated with Cushing's disease or hypothyroidism. A checkup is a must to make sure your pet is healthy enough for an increase in exercise and to discuss a proper feeding schedule.

Overweight dogs and cats don?t deserve lower quality ingredients to lose weight; they simply need your help in providing them with the proper amount of high quality food. If you're already feeding your pet CANIDAE or FELIDAE, you know the benefits of providing a well balanced, natural and healthy diet. Pets that eat a premium quality food like CANIDAE or FELIDAE don't have to eat as much in order to feel full. Along with proper exercise, a high quality food can help keep your pet at their recommended weight.

Veterinarians agree that being overweight can be a detriment to canine and feline health. If you have a pudgy pet, don't over-indulge in treats, and feed them a high quality premium food designed specifically for overweight and less active pets, like CANIDAE Platinum for dogs and FELIDAE Platinum for cats. These two formulas were designed to provide complete and balanced premium nutrition with less fat and fewer calories, so pets can achieve their recommended weight without sacrificing on nutrition or essential vitamins and minerals.

Exercise can also help your overweight pet slim down, and it?s a great way to spend quality time together. If your dog isn't used to a daily walk, start by going around one block and then slowly increase the distance. Playing fetch, tug of war, hide-and-seek or any favorite game can help work off extra pounds. However, make sure you don't overwork an obese pet.

Most cats love to play with their owner. If you aren't in the habit of playing, now would be a good time to start if your cat has put on extra pounds. It only takes about 10 to 15 minutes a day, and it can make a big difference. Another option is to fix up a ?play box? for your cat. Take a cardboard box or build one out of wood, then cut three or four holes in the top and on all four sides. The holes should be just large enough for your curious cat to stick her paws through. Put ping pong balls, catnip toys or any cat friendly toy in the enclosed box and stand back while she explores with her paws. Change the toys every so often to keep the box interesting. Make sure whatever you put in the box can't be pulled out by your cat's paws.

We are the ones who control how much food our pets eat. We are also responsible for making sure our pets get enough exercise each day to help keep them healthy. It's not always easy to do, but that is part of the responsibility we accepted when we brought them into our home. Obesity in pets is a serious problem, but we can help them lose weight with a quality food and enough exercise. As a bonus, the exercise is good for us too!

Equivalent Day Payday Financial loans Vs Regular Financial loans ...

Many persons understand exact same day payday loans and consistent or common loans to be the identical. Even while a consistent financial loan can be a lifespan saver to another person who is in dire really need of income, it can also become an various other obstacle instead than an answer if you offer with the unsuitable fiscal establishment. For just one detail, getting a regular financial loan is not that painless, and the necessities to get approval are aplenty. Various everyday people perceive exact day payday loans to be the identical. In truth, there are primary variations between a typical mortgage and a very same day payday loan. Listed here are some of the details that differentiate the two.

    App Course of action

Just one of the leading variances around the two is in the application routine. In standard financial loans, these kinds of as these available by finance institutions, you are necessary to personally head to the lender or monetary institution to utilize for a loan. On the other hand, finance establishments that offer pay out day loans process bank loan purposes web based. All you will want to do is fill out an app type and ship the prerequisites using the web and the finance institution will technique your application right absent.

    Approval Method

Seeing that the personal loan application is conducted on the internet, you can assume speedy approval of your loan. Generally usual loan applications are accepted in 3-five organisation times, relying on the lender. The approval system can even require weeks or months, based on how very much you intend to borrow. On the other hand, the payday financial loan approval routine only needs less than 24 several hours. Right after you fill out the program form on the lender?s homepage, all you desire to do is to wait around for the notification on whether your financial loan program is authorised or not in 24 several hours. Some loan providers even approve bank loan programs in as quickly as a lot less than two several hours.

    Approval Rating

The approval ranking in payday loan apps is also comparably greater than in other varieties of loans. This is given that there is only a person leading need you have to comply with if you want to attain such bank loan, and that is your potential to pay. Unlike in typical financial loans that will need debtors to have a good credit score, you really don?t require to have a wonderful credit score heritage to get approved on this kind of loan.

As prolonged as you can confirm that you can pay out your financial loan, that you are at minimum 18 several years previous, and that you have an lively financial institution account, you can most probably get extremely fast approval on your program. Just after the financial loan app is accepted, the funds will be directly deposited to your lender account.

    Payment System

An extra primary big difference somewhere between the two is in the payment plan. Ordinary bank loan payment course of action is substantially considerably more complicated as in contrast to that in an equivalent day payday mortgage. To fork out your standard or typical personal loan, you can desire to personally pay a visit to the lending establishment, despite the fact that some finance institutions presently now supply you with other payment alternate options these types of as on-line repayments. On the contrary, some lending establishments coordinate with the supplier you are working for. Your provider will pay for your bank loan and will deduct the amount you borrowed and your bank loan fascination from your next salary. Some lending institutions also allow for over the internet installments so you never have to personally shell out for your spend day mortgage.

    Curiosity Amount

The curiosity price of this form of financial loan is comparably increased than of a frequent personal loan. Yet, thinking about the benefit and short processing in this form of personal loan, the variation in interest charges is all price it for quite a few persons.

Head impacts in contact sports may reduce learning in college athletes

ScienceDaily (May 16, 2012) ? A new study suggests that head impacts experienced during contact sports such as football and hockey may worsen some college athletes' ability to acquire new information. The research is published in the May 16, 2012, online issue of Neurology?, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

The study involved college athletes at three Division I schools and compared 214 athletes in contact sports to 45 athletes in non-contact sports such as track, crew and Nordic skiing at the beginning and at the end of their seasons. The contact sport athletes wore special helmets that recorded the acceleration speed and other data at the time of any head impact.

The contact sport athletes experienced an average of 469 head impacts during the season. Athletes were not included in the study if they were diagnosed with a concussion during the season.

All of the athletes took tests of thinking and memory skills before and after the season. A total of 45 contact sport athletes and 55 non-contact sport athletes from one of the schools also took an additional set of tests of concentration, working memory and other skills.

"The good news is that overall there were few differences in the test results between the athletes in contact sports and the athletes in non-contact sports," said study author Thomas W. McAllister, MD, of The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth in Lebanon, N.H. "But we did find that a higher percentage of the contact sport athletes had lower scores than would have been predicted after the season on a measure of new learning than the non-contact sport athletes."

A total of 22 percent of the contact sport athletes performed worse than expected on the test of new learning, compared to four percent of the non-contact sport athletes.

McAllister noted that the study did not find differences in test results between the two groups of athletes at the beginning of the season, suggesting that the cumulative head impacts that contact athletes had incurred over many previous seasons did not result in reduced thinking and memory skills in the overall group.

"These results are somewhat reassuring, given the recent heightened concern about the potential negative effects of these sports," he said. "Nevertheless, the findings do suggest that repetitive head impacts may have a negative effect on some athletes."

McAllister said it's possible that some people may be genetically more sensitive to head impacts.

The study was supported by the National Institutes of Health and the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment.

Missing 'Persian Gulf' label on Google Maps angers Iran

    6 hrs.

Typically companies anger the public by taking a controversial action, but in Google's case,?not doing something is causing backlash.?The search engine giant's decision to not label a body of water between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula on Google Maps?has many Iranians outraged.

Let's start with a brief history lesson.

The body of water located?off the southern coast of Iran (aka Persia)?is commonly known as the Persian Gulf, but many Arab nations, some of?which also border it, refer to it as the Arabian Gulf. As people often do, those on either side of that naming dispute hold strong opinions and occasionally lash out at those who disagree with them.

With that in mind, it is not particularly surprising that?there are multiple reports of Iranian authorities expressing their disapproval and even?threatening legal action against Google.

The Associated Press reports that Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast told the Mehr news agency that Google will face "serious damages" if it does not add a label to the body of water in question.?

According to CNN, Iranian officials also "accused Google of having removed the words 'Persian Gulf'" from Google Maps via state-run news agency IRNA. Several other outlets repeated similar statements, but?a Google spokesperson clarified to?the Guardian that "reports were exaggerated and that it had not removed the term Persian Gulf, saying that 'the body of water' had not been labelled from the beginning, like many other places."

BBC's?Sebastian Usher writes that a Google representative additionally?told him that "the company also did not want to take any political stance in response to the angry Iranian reaction."

We have reached out to Google ourselves, but have not received a comment. It is doubtful that the search engine giant will make a move on this issue. After all, it isn't the first time something like this has come up, as the NY Post points out:

Iran routinely lashes out at what it sees as the incorrect naming of the waters.

In 2010, it warned that airlines using the term "Arabian Gulf" on in-flight monitors would be barred from Iranian airspace

As?for msnbc.com and many other news outlets, we will continue to?refer to it in our coverage?as the Persian Gulf, citing the AP Stylebook, which says: "Use this long-established name for the body of water off the southern coast of Iran."

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts, or circling her?on?Google+.

Switched On: And smartplayers for all

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

    Image

A few weeks ago, Switched On noted the challenges that even wildly popular, highly penetrated devices such as MP3 players and portable GPS devices have faced in the era of the converged device. Some of these devices, such as digital cameras, still hold on because of genuine advantages such as better image quality or optical zoom. For others devices, though, such as MP3 players and portable GPS devices, the grim news is that one of the main reasons consumers use them is to save smartphone battery life.

Europe votes to cap data roaming prices, will make it cheaper to tweet from Ibiza

    European Union flags

European Union countries already had a data roaming cutoff law in place to prevent bill shock after your next Balearic vacation, but the price of the data in question should get much cheaper very soon. The European Parliament has just voted 578 to 10 to cap the price customers pay at no more than 70 Euro cents (91 US cents) per megabyte starting from July 1st, with that price eventually dipping to 45 Euro cents (58c US) a year later and just 20 Euro cents (26 US cents) in 2014. Voice and text price caps are going down to as little as 19 and nine Euro cents (25 and 12 cents US) in that two-year span, and if you're visiting from outside the EU, you'll be glad to hear that the anti-bill shock rule will apply to you this year as well. So, while you still might want to avoid uploading large videos from your phone while in Spain, you'll at least have the option of checking in on Foursquare without having to take out a small mortgage.

Chronicle of a trial foretold: Breivik is following his manifesto's script

Anders Behring Breivik's manifesto includes instructions on what a 'Templar' should do if tried in a European court.

Among the early headlines from the fourth day of the trial of Anders Behring Breivik for the murder of 77 people last July was that, for the first time, Mr. Breivik did not perform his now-familiar clenched-fist salute upon arrival at the court. Several families of Breivik's victims said they found the salute offensive, and his lawyers apparently were able to convince him to stop and avoid undermining his case.

But the drop of the salute is not only significant for its effect on his defense's strategy. It also marks a significant departure from Breivik's playbook: his 1,500-page manifesto. Breivik wrote extensively not only about his own beliefs about the alleged activities of "the Marxist tyrants of Europe" and the mission of the Knights Templar, or "Templars," the group to which he claims to belong. He also wrote a comprehensive set of instructions and guidelines for what a Templar should do if tried in a European court. He appears to be following it to the extent he is able.

Breivik wrote a short section on his salute, which he claims to be "the military salutation" of the Templars. He writes that the salute, which he recommends being performed in a white glove, symbolizes strength, purity, and resistance against "the Marxist tyrants of Europe." Interestingly, he claims the salute has nothing to do with either racist "white power" salutes or with the similar, open-palmed Nazi salute.

While Breivik's manifesto does not mention the salute specifically in reference to a trial, its use at trial fits closely into what Breivik argues is the best way to use trials: as propaganda. Breivik writes that after being captured, "the subsequent court proceedings may present several propaganda opportunities." He adds that "This trial is (from our point of view), not against you but rather a trial against the regime."

One of the key openings for propaganda that Breivik saw is the opportunity to present an opening and closing statement. Breivik includes a four-page sample opening statement, which he seemed to use as a source for his own.?

His sample draws parallels between the quest of the "Templars" and that of Native American leaders like Sitting Bull ? parallels he made on the first day of testimony in his own trial. As the Monitor reported, ?Were they terrorists for fighting for their indigenous culture ? or were they heroes?? Breivik asked the court. ?My acts are based on goodness, not evil,? he added. ?If anyone is vicious it is the Socialists.?

In the manifesto, Breivik also outlines a dress code for Templars, which he says should be adhered to in court. "Our dress uniform ... will be used for the sole?purpose of representing the authority of our military order and tribunal during trial," he writes. The uniform is to include a US Marine Corp dress jacket in dark blue or black, dress pants in the same color, and an extensive set of medals and decorations including epaulettes and Templar badges. Judging from the photos of his appearances in court, Breivik seems to have been following his own dress code as best he can, though he has appeared sans pseudo-military decorations.

In his game plan for Templar trial appearances, Breivik shows every expectation of losing. The heading for his sample closing statement reads: "Closing statement ? last day of trial, after judgment (guilty)." But he also expresses hope that the trial may lead to the introduction of stiffer criminal sentences, and perhaps even introduction of the death penalty, which is currently illegal in Norway.

The trial itself may not end up as anything else than a formality where the goal can be to change the law, forcing the parliament of that country to introduce the death penalty, or harshen the penal laws in other ways. Indirectly forcing the parliament of your country to change the laws will be an indirect victory to our movement because it will provide significant media coverage of our cause and thus will contribute to future recruitment efforts.

Breivik echoed this thinking during his second day of testimony, the Monitor reported.

?No, I don?t want [capital punishment], but I would have respected that,? he said, adding that if Norway doubled the current maximum sentence it would ?serve his cause? and ?prove Norway had thrown their principles out the window."

Final Nail In The Joost Coffin: Adconion Rebrands, Folds Video Service Into Smartclip

smartclipLooks like the final frame has been reached for Joost, the online video service originally started by Skype founders Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis and then eventually sold to the Adconion Media Group: Adconion today announced that it would fold in and rebrand Joost Media into smartclip, a video advertising company that it bought in November 2011. The company says it is making the move in order to better serve the U.S. market, where it is now launching services, and presumably believes that using one brand is stronger than using two.

Shares of BlackBerry maker hit eight-year low

(AP) ? Shares of Research in Motion Ltd. hit an eight-year low Thursday and have fallen more than 15 percent in the past three days, after the company unveiled a prototype BlackBerry with new software.

THE SPARK: The prototype has caused angst for BlackBerry users and RIM investors. When new chief executive Thorsten Heins unveiled a touchscreen prototype Tuesday at RIM's annual BlackBerry World conference in Orlando, Fla., he gave no new timetable on when the much-delayed devices will be released.

Then on Wednesday, he had to reassure anxious BlackBerry users that RIM will keep making models that include a physical keyboard. He stressed that the device and new software is not the final product.

Heins also didn't announce any licensing partnerships. Some investors want RIM to generate more revenue by licensing products, like its popular BBM messenger service, to other carriers.

Jefferies analyst Peter Misek said Wednesday night that Heins said he would wait to see what kind of demand there was for BlackBerry 10 before pursuing possible licensing deals.

THE BIG PICTURE: The once iconic company is caught in a tough spot. It needs to get out its new software platform, the BlackBerry 10, while continuing to sell current models.

But sales have slumped, and are likely to be pressured further as shoppers wait for the newest software to go on sale. RIM has had difficulty competing in the United States with flashier, consumer-oriented touchscreen phones such as Apple Inc.'s iPhone and models that run Google Inc.'s Android software.

Analysts say RIM's future depends on BlackBerry 10, although many say it may come too late. RIM has been undergoing a comprehensive strategic review for the last three months.

The ANALYSIS: Misek said that the fact that RIM released a prototype now means the new BlackBerrys won't be out until the end of the year.

Colin Gillis, an analyst with BGC Financial, said it could be a year before there are any signs that RIM's new BlackBerry 10 software is winning customers.

Gillis also faulted the company on its communications strategy, saying that RIM could have prevented BlackBerry subscribers from worrying if there would be a physical keyboard on some of the new BlackBerry models.

SHARE ACTION: RIM shares fell 70 cents, or 5.4 percent, to $12.10 in afternoon trading on the Nasdaq. The shares have lost almost three-quarters of their value over the past 12 months, and bottomed at $11.92 on Thursday, their lowest point since January 2004.
